IPMA Recruits Assessors for IPMA Project Excellence Award 2012

Reported by Ewa Bednarczyk in Krakow

17 January 2012 - Every year a group of around 100 assessors get a unique chance to gain the experience in the assessment of the best managed projects in the world. They assess the projects coming from all industries and continents which take the challenge and apply for the IPMA International Project Excellence Award. This is the annual award organized by the International Project Management Association, based on the Project Excellence Model.

The assessors are the heart of the assessment process. In each project case four or five assessors work together on an application. Prof. Ding Ronggui (China) and Prof. Rajat Baisya (India) both experience assessors, Team Lead Assessors and Trainers stress that this is an excellence chance to work with project professionals and share ideas and lessons with them.

The first part of the assessment is done based on the application report, secondly the assessors meet with the project team and stakeholders at the site visit. The single benefit of being an assessor according toProf. Ding Ronngui is the fact that at the site visit the assessors have an opportunity to discuss with excellent project managers in different industries how to manage projects successfully, to review real case documents an management tools, and to get lots of best practices, which are valuable to make great improvement to our projects.

For another experience TLAs Greg Dzwonnik (Poland) working with the best projects in the world is something he values most highly in this job: "it is absolutely great feeling to be in the front line and observe companies which shapes PM body of knowledge. As an assessor he has a great chance to learn from the mistakes of others and, what is even more important, I am inspired by the best professionals. It helps me to build my individual lessons learned repository much faster. In that sense each assessment is for me a priceless source of guidance where to find in my current work the areas for further improvement."

Prof. Rajat Baisya adds that each project is unique in its character, deliverables, complexity and resources. Therefore, working as an assessor provides new learning in terms of how the local project management team has addressed those issues in a given situation. There is always a better way of doing things and thus assessor gets to know how projects are managed and project management practices are evolving in different socio- cultural set up. Integration of these knowledge provides new insights to an assessor.

Moreover assessors get a holistic perspective of how project performance is measured and how various criteria and sub-criteria impacts projects results. And most importantly assessors get to know a model of project assessment which can be applied in their own work situation.

Now the IPMA gives an opportunity to become an assessor for the 2012 competition by organizing two assessors training in Europe (2-4 March- Milan) and Asia (30 March-1 April - Kathmandu).

As Prof. Ding Ronngui says: "The managers applying for international award are great, and you might be their assessor. This kind of special experience is so wonderful!". These two Facebook postings might have some implications for IPMA PE Excellence Awards in South Africa.  Is there some development work we might engage during the Festival of Knowledge or the extended visit?

Special thanks to Pieter G Steyn and Elzabe Zovitsky -- along with about a hundred others! -- who have crafted the IPMA Festival of Knowledge event. See you in Riversdale. Bring your laptop. We've got brand new stuff to inspire us!

We are just starting some marketing of the IPMA award in France and are starting to translate the model in French. It seems Companies are interested into a self assessment tool and we think the PE model can serve that purpose. But if you would had something more simple, we could also add it to the offer.

Comment by Erik Månsson on December 16, 2011 at 12:27am

Dear Agnes, the main outcome of Brisbane was to initiate a working group for new simplified and low cost awards in addition to the existing to be launched in 2013 at national and IPMA level in parallel. Thus, national award winners will be able to continue to the IPMA award with the same application. In the trial year we aim for 3 new award categories including community projects, international humanitarian aid projects as well as an individual award for project managers.

In line with comments from Rajat and Marco will now the priority be to get the support of EXBO and CoD for launching this project and get as many MAs as possible onboard for the trial year 2013. Once we have been able to substantial increase the award community within IPMA with many new MAs joining in this low cost and high impact (marketing towards new association membership) we will be able to discuss next steps such as further award categories. The idea of an MA award could then be considered as well.

Comment by Marco Buijnsters on December 15, 2011 at 11:50pm
I rather agree with Rajat. So far only 6-10 out of 42 MA's organize local PE-Awards. Let's 1st get the majority in our PE Award process before developing too many new things which don't add to this objective.
This will be a big enough challange enough given the actual status and trend.
Comment by Agnes Roux-Kiener on December 15, 2011 at 1:26am

Was this discussed in Brisbane? As I could not attend, I would be interested in a summary of the PE Assessors meeting. Does it exist somewhere?

Comment by Prof Rajat K.Baisya on December 14, 2011 at 11:13pm

It is a good idea but may not be that easy to implement. Reason Excellence award at MA level is not yet taken roots. Only possibly a few MAs have instituted that. First task would thus be persuading all MAs to start PE award at national level. If we have a reasonable nos we can  then think in this line. We also have a big task to market our current product. Rajat Baisya

Comment by Erik Månsson on December 13, 2011 at 9:25am

I like the idea to promote excellence at all levels and why not also make visible successful examples of managing a Member Association as a way to create good examples for other MAs to model.
